Once Queensr˙che returned from supporting its debut EP, the band had plenty of material devised for its first full-length record, The Warning. The band hooked up with noted Pink Floyd producer James Guthrie, and recorded Queensr˙che's first album in London, England. Inspired lyrically by world events and George Orwell's "1984," the album began Queensr˙che's ongoing experimentation, pushing the band towards a more progressive flair, while retaining Queensr˙che's core metal sound.
The recording sessions for The Warning also marked the beginning of Queensr˙che's relationship with composer Michael Kamen, who led the orchestration on the album. In addition, the relationship with Guthrie led to a number of surprise visits to the studio, including Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin - a huge thrill for guitarist Chris DeGarmo.
Once the record was completed, mixed, and mastered, EMI Records, to the band's dismay, had Val Garay re-mix and re-sequence the album, moving The Warning's opening cut, "NM 156" to the middle of the record, while pushing up "Warning," which would be the lead single, to the front. In addition, the new mix buried the guitar sound - something that the band were furious over once they found out, while on tour in Japan in August 1984.
The tour supporting The Warning had Queensr˙che on the road for a solid eight to nine months, concluding with a number of headline appearances in California, where they would debut "Neue Regel," a song written for the band's next album, Rage for Order. While primarily an opener (Queensr˙che again supported Dio, and also toured with KISS and Iron Maiden, among others), a strong underground fanbase developed outside of Queensr˙che's Seattle home. Not only were the Japanese fans in a fervor over the band, fans in New York, Texas, and Southern California came out in droves, solidifying Queensr˙che's credibility as a live act.
