If Empire was the commercial landmark for progressive bands in 1990, 1994's Promised Land release marks a stunning return to the band's underground roots. Dark, melancholy, and haunting Promised Land is a self-portrait, depicting the darker side of success through lyrics of life, direction, family, and death. The music is just as diverse as the band itself, with aggressive metal cuts such as "Damaged," and more acoustic-based tunes such as the somber "Bridge" and retrospective piano piece, "Someone Else?" The album was remastered and re-released in 2003 with four bonus tracks, including the popular "Real World" which was co-written with the late Michael Kamen. |
